Piebalds are mosaic sugar gliders that have an unusual patch (or patches) of fur on their body. These patches are usually expressed as classic coloration on a mosaic sugar glider. These are in direct contrast to the mosaic coloring of the sugar glider, and are can be large or very small. The spots are pigmented in shades of black or gray as determined by the genotype controlling the color of the animal. The animal's skin underneath its coat may or may not be pigmented under the spots but the skin in the white background is not pigmented.
Location of the pigmented spots is dependent on the migration of Melan oblasts (primordial pigment cells) from the neural crest to paired bilateral locations in the skin of the early embryo. The resulting pattern appears symmetrical only if Melan oblasts migrate to both locations of a pair and proliferate to the same degree in both locations.
Piebaldism in Sugar Gliders is quite rare. Most Piebald’s have smaller spots or less distinctive markings. A “Wow” piebald, is a Sugar Glider with extremely distinctive large patches of normal classic coloring in direct contrast to white fur. These are extremely rare and seeing one in person makes you go “wow”. Famous WOW Piebald’s born at The Pet Glider are: Patches, Damon, Polka Dot, Kaleidoscope, Corkey, Collin, Spec-tacular and more. Breeding gliders from a Piebald family can result in WOW pies.

At the Pet Glider, we fly (ship) our sugar gliders on Passenger Planes that have climate-controlled cargo areas (with same day arrival). Please be aware that there is the potential for flights to be delayed or rescheduled due to issues beyond our control, such as weather or mechanical concerns. We package our gliders with extra hydrating food and water gel for this reason and include instructions for airline personnel on the shipping crate in case of delay.
The shipping cost is $99.00 for domestic flights (United States) through Delta Airlines and this covers up to four sugar gliders. The airline that we use can vary based on your location. This shipping cost is for gliders shipped within the contiguous United States. This include airfare, shipping crate and travel/sleeping pouch. We ship throughout the United States. Canada is considered an international destination; therefore, shipping will need to be discussed & quoted. In addition, we are Expert International Shippers and ship our sugar gliders worldwide. If you have additional questions about shipping to your area, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Summer Heat or Winter Cold: We try to exclusively use Delta Airlines to ship our sugar gliders domestically. Their pet-safe program is top-notch, and they have temperature-controlled vans that transport live animals to the planes. However, Delta does not fly to all locations. Some airlines have heat or cold embargoes imposed for the safety of the animals. Live animals are not allowed to take off or land in a location where the temperature is not safe for live animals. We do our best to work around these embargoes. Be advised that we may have to postpone the arrival of your new family member until the weather in your part of the world changes either cools down or warms up.
